RMPS

RMPS / Philosophy

S1 to S4 Core

Religious and Moral Education (RME) enables pupils to explore the world’s major religions, views which are independent of religious belief, and to consider the challenges posed by these beliefs and values. From first to forth year, pupils will study a wide range of world religions such as Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Sikhism. They are also provided with the opportunity to study a range of moral and philosophical issues such as poverty in the world, the existence of God, and medical ethics. These core courses are designed for pupils to develop important critical thinking skills as well as their own responses to moral questions.

National 5/ Higher RMPS

National5/ Higher RMPS provides pupils with the opportunity to explore many relevant contemporary issues as well as develop key analytical thinking and speaking skills. Higher RMPS is also viewed very favourably by Universities and higher education establishments as well as many professions. This is due to the thinking skills that pupils develop and are able to demonstrate within their course work. These specific skills are always sought after by employers. The course itself consists of an assignment and three units: a selected world religion, moral issue and philosophical question.

Higher Philosophy

In Higher Philosophy pupils have the opportunity to learn how to challenge themselves and their assumptions, and equip themselves with the ability to approach any issues from a much broader perspective. They are given the opportunity to read from the works of leading philosophers and develop confidence in their own reasoning and ability to make informed decisions. This course consists of an assessment as well as three units: Moral Philosophy, knowledge and doubt and Arguments in action. A Philosophy qualification is also looked on favourably by Universities and colleges as evidence of developing higher order thinking skills.
